Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors who make this event the best salmon derby in the world.
The 24th annual derby will take place on June 19 and 20, 2010
Check the site periodically for updates for this year's big event.
2009 turned out to be one heck of a derby with a technical 'Tie of Tyees' for 1st place with the first fish weighed taking the prize as the rules state. Both fish weighed in at 36.2 lbs. Between 1st and 5th place there was only a difference of 0.6 pounds (9.6 ounces).

Congratulations to first place winner James Hawthorne: 36.2 pounds:

2nd place winner Riley Smith: with a tied tyee of 36.2 lbs
Congratulations to the many, many winners at this years derby. Fishing was great Saturday with a much better presence of Chinook this year. It was quite a run between 1st and 2nd place this year with both fish weighing in at 36.2 pounds. As per the rules, first place went to the first to be weighed in. Interestingly, the winning 2008 derby winning Chinook weighed in at 36.8 pounds. Joe Kadar caught that one entirely on his own.
First: 36.2 lbs: James Hawthorne
Second: 36.2 lbs: Riley Smith
Third: 36.0 lbs: Dave Homer
Fourth: 35.7 lbs: George Doulakis
Fifth: 35.6 lbs: Brian Busby

George Doulakis of Lazy Days Charters decided to keep fishing for "the big one" rather than running in to weigh this beautiful fourth final place fish. George continued to fish for over seven hours before hitting the scales to weigh in. George is adamant that he will not be making a similar decision again in the future. At weigh in George's fish was exactly a half pound less (0.5lb) than the two winning and technically tied fish. Time was the deciding factor all around. We have never had a closer finish for the top 5 places.
Pro-Troll Fishing Products, based out of California recently contacted the derby executive and let us know that they think that the Juan de Fuca Salmon Derby is now the "Top Derby in Canada" (not just the top salmon derby) . Thanks to all who make this event such a tremendous success.
